Dechinta is committed to delivering innovative training programs in communities across the north. This includes training programming for Elders, youth and Indigenous land-users, as well as supporting community-led efforts for the creation of curriculum and programming that reflects the needs of their communities. Dechinta’s multi-generational and sustainable approach to program delivery builds up the long-term capacity of communities to develop and deliver their own educational programming. We are currently working in every region of the NWT and in the Yukon.

Recurring Community Programs
Fish camps are a land-based program focusing on Indigenous ways of life and the hands-on teaching of new skills, where participants learn the history of ice fishing and the practical skills of how to provide food for yourself in the winter. It typically involves a two-week long camp where school groups, the public, community groups and/or local youth groups come to our site to learn how to catch fish in a gilnet under the ice, how to cut dry fish and fillets, and to hear stories from our staff.
Arts and Culture Camps
Arts and culture camps offer participants an opportunity to engage in different Indigenous creative practices while also learning how cultural and artistic practices have an important role in politics and governance. Our programs encourage students to explore artistic practice in various forms, including moose hide tanning, literature and performance arts.

Our language camps offer on-the-land opportunities for adults and youth to work with traditional language and land-based skills, while also creating opportunities for youth engagement in the creation of training and documentation materials. Participants are invited to learn language skills alongside traditional skills from Elders for a wholistic and land-based approach to language learning.
Land & Governance
Dechinta offers land-based and governance workshops that involve a wide range of topics depending on community expertise and needs, ensuring that these events directly benefit the Indigenous communities involved. In conjunction with these workshops and outreach events, Dechinta aims to support communities in areas such as program-planning, program-delivery, policy integration, and training/employment initiatives.
Youth, Women, and Queer/Two-Spirit Governance Training
Dechinta offers specific trainings for youth and women/gender-diverse individuals that aim to establish confidence in all participants in their role and place in governance, connect these groups to regional leadership and National representation, build skills in governance and leadership, share information about government processes, and promote capacity-building.
Chekoa Nı̨ htł’èkǫ ̨̀ Deè (KidsU) Program
Dechinta's KidsU program offers free childcare for children aged 3 to 16 when a family member is attending a Dechinta program.

Our Community Ethics
Dechinta understands that Indigenous education and knowledge systems are predicated on a continuous reciprocal relationship with community. We uphold TRC Call to Action #83, which calls for community-controlled revitalization projects. Our education and cultural programs are dependent upon and take direction from the knowledge, traditions, and needs of Indigenous Elders and community members.
Elders and Indigenous Knowledge Holders have been responsible for generating new knowledge within community for generations. They are experts, and while knowledge production does not conform to the same practices as western based systems and remains marginalized within colonial society and institutions, it remains a robust system. We are committed to employing Indigenous Elders and Knowledge holders for their expertise and providing them with a fair compensation that aligns with the same professional fees charged by Western university experts.
