In Winter 2024 we are delivering 5 accredited courses. Choose to join us for 1, 2 or 3 weeks. Or take all 5 courses and complete the Dechinta Certificate in Land and Community Based Research, accredited by the University of British Columbia.

Winter Semester 2024: Course Details

​INLB 210- Indigenous Land and Self-Determination in Theory (Hybrid) 

Course Dates: January to April 2024

10 weekly meetings starting Monday January 25th 

Hybrid Online (20 hours) and on the land (20 hours)

This course is an introduction to the core theories of Northern Indigenous Governance and Self-Determination. It is co-taught by Dr. Lianne Charlie (Northern Tutchone, Dechinta Faculty) and Christopher Tse (guest instructor from UVic) and pilots a dual pathway approach based on social identities. The aim is to create a learning environment that explores ally and Indigenous responsibilities by putting theories of resurgence, social justice and Indigenous governance into action. This is a required course for the Dechinta Certificate and appropriate for students new to Dechinta.

INLB 201F- Dene Land Struggles in an International Context

Course Dates: February 12-16th, Chief Drygeese Territory

This course with explore the international cultural, political, and economic context that

informed the Dene struggle over land and self-determination from the travels of Yamoria

and Yamozha through to the present.

INLB 201x- Sovereign Creative Practice: Writing Our Land

Course Dates: February 19-25th 2024, Chief Drygeese Territory

This is a course for students who are excited about writing, who want to be writers and who are looking for an opportunity to hone their writing practice. Students will spend half of the day together learning on the land with our Elders and engaged in Indigenous land based practices. The other half will be spent in studio, engaged in a series of writing activities designed to assist students in producing a final creative writing project in poetry, creative nonfiction, fiction or in their own traditions of storytelling. As a group, we will learn editing skills, how to ask for feedback and how to provide effective feedback. Students should expect to spend most of their time in this course engaged in their own practice of writing with the support and mentorship of the instructors and guests. 

INLB 250 Indigenous Knowledge, Science and Environmental Justice: Dene Knowledge and Climate Catastrophe

Course Dates: March 25 to March 29th 2024, Chief Drygeese Territory

This course explores the colonial roots of climate catastrophe in the north from drought to rising temperatures, invasive species, melting permafrost, flooding, displacement and of course unprecedented wildfires. Using Dene Laws as a foundation, we will investigate ways of meeting the needs of our people in this present moment and building beyond. We will discuss mutual aid, organizing, transformative justice and ways to strengthen Indigenous self-determination, our connections to land and each other in the face of climate disaster.

INLB 220*  Indigenous Land and Self-Determination in Practice (March 25-29th)

Course Dates: March 25 to March 29th 2024, Chief Drygeese Territory

This course is a one week on the land intensive with Dene Elders and land based practitioners. By traveling the land and being immersed in Dene land based practices, students will deepen their understanding of Dene self-determination through embodied politics and by learning directly from the experts. Activities may include reading the land and weather conditions, setting up camp, storytelling, harvesting medicine, survival practices, hunting, trapping and fishing. Students must have completed one other Dechinta course as a prerequisite for this course.

Get a copy of your post-secondary transcripts (if applicable) and attach them to the Dechinta application form in step three

*Note: If you are currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution you will also need a letter of permission from your current post-secondary institution to apply.

Complete the Dechinta application form below, attaching your UBC application form and transcripts to the application
